Product Review: Mayflash Nintendo Switch Magic-NS Wireless Adapter
With over 10 Million units sold in it’s first year, the Nintendo Switch has been a wild success. And with great consoles, comes great accessories (Sorry Spiderman). There’s been no shortage of docks and cases, and there are plenty of controller options. The system itself ships with two JoyCon controllers that detach from the system and can be used as a pair for one player, or split between two.
One of the best controllers available… isn’t actually a controller. Its the a handy little device by Mayflash, called the Magic-NS Wireless Adapter. SOLD HERE on Amazon for $24.99 (link is not sponsored in any way), this lets you use almost any wireless game controller on your switch. It just requires that the controller have Bluetooth, so.. sorry Xbox360 controllers, you’re out. But why would you want this? Isn’t the Switch Pro Controller just amazing? And what about those $25 licensed wired Pro Controllers with those cool themed shells? Well.. simply put.. those just aren’t that great for certain kinds of gaming. The D-Pad on the Pro-Controller is miserable, so good-luck if you like 2D platformers and fighting games! And those nifty looking Licensed controllers lack many features like NFC and Gyro-controls. The device isn’t without its faults, but for $25 it’s close to perfect. Keep reading below if you want to learn more.
FEATURES: The Magic-NS Wireless Adapted connects via bluetooth to most next-gen controllers, and via USB to a few others with its included dongle. Essentially, it’s like any USB Bluetooth receiver for your PC.. except the firmware is pre-configured for connecting to game systems so it will be recognized instantly, and the button layouts on each type of controller are already mapped for you. What that means is.. plug it in, press a button to cycle through the colored lights until you get to the one that matches your system. Sync a controller.. enjoy.
There are some controller specific functions that may be missing. This device does NOT support NFC, so no Amiibo reading. As for Rumble, I tested it on my PS4 Dualshock4 with Splatoon2 and Zelda Breath of the Wild.. rumble worked fine. Same with my WiiU Pro-Controller. Motion Control is ONLY supported on the Playstation DualShock4, so if you are getting this to play Splatoon2 (or any other Motion Control heavy game) make sure you have a DS4.
EASE OF USE: Once the device is set up.. it just works. In over 100 hours of playtime between a WiiU Pro Controller and a PS4 Dual-Shock4, I never noticed any input lag, disconnects, button miss-fires, etc. Setting up the device, however, leaves a little to be desired. The Sync button is tiny.. and I mean TINY. It’s hard to tell if it is being depressed properly, which can leave you wondering if you’re pressing the button properly or if it’s just broken. It took me several attempts of holding the button for the required 5-10 seconds to get the light to change as my fingernail would move a half a millimeter and invalidate the process. C’mon guys, you didn’t have to make the button so small, nor did you have to make it perfectly flush with the device.
VERDICT: MUST BUY If you don’t already have a Switch Pro Controller.. or even if you do, owning this is a MUST. It allows you to use the controllers you are most comfortable with on the systems you want… not to mention keeping those controllers out of a box in the attic somewhere. There’s nothing quite like the feel of inking turf with a DualShock4.
